Band for VS Code

Band for VS Code runs a team of coding agents on your machine and coordinates them in Band rooms from a VS Code sidebar. Each agent runs through a coding CLI you already have installed: Claude Code, Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, or Oh My Pi.

This page describes Band for VS Code 1.8.1, Marketplace ID band-ai.band.

Prerequisites

Band does not install, update, or sign in to these CLIs. It launches the version your machine resolves and checks that the CLI provides the capabilities Band needs before the agent starts.

Install and Sign In

Install Band for VS Code from the Visual Studio Marketplace. Open the Command Palette and run Band: Open.

Select Sign in with browser and approve the sign-in in your browser. VS Code picks up the session when you return. For a self-hosted Band deployment, select Use a custom server URL and enter its Platform URL first.

If the window has no folder open, or the folder is not trusted, Band shows a dialog and does not run agents in that window. The dialog offers Open a folder or Manage workspace trust.

Add Agents

Open the Agents tab and add a new agent, or connect an existing Band agent to this machine. Each agent has these settings:

FieldValues
HarnessClaude (Claude Code), Codex (Codex CLI), Copilot (GitHub Copilot CLI), Oh My Pi
RoleArchitect, Engineer, Consultant, Custom
ModelThe models the selected CLI reports, or Default
Permission modeDepends on the harness, see Permission Modes

The built-in roles divide the work. The Architect plans the approach, assigns work, and reviews results. The Engineer implements and tests the assigned work. The Consultant researches and reviews without changing your code. Start with one Architect and one Engineer.

A Custom role takes its instructions from a Role source: User prompt (text you type), Markdown file, or Skills folder on this machine. Band reads a linked file or folder again at every start, and does not send its path or contents to the Band platform.

Permission Modes

The permission mode decides what the CLI may do with your files and commands without asking. Band passes the mode to the CLI.

HarnessModesDefault for Architect and EngineerDefault for Consultant and Custom
Claude CodeManual, Plan, Accept edits, Auto, Bypass permissionsAutoManual
Codex CLIRead only, Workspace write, Full accessWorkspace writeRead only
GitHub Copilot CLINative, YoloNativeNative
Oh My PiYoloYoloYolo

Bypass permissions, Full access, and Yolo run without routine approval checks. Oh My Pi offers only Yolo, so an Oh My Pi agent acts on your project without asking first.

Start Your First Room

Open the Rooms tab. In the message field, mention the agents you want in the room and address the task to the Architect, then send it. Band creates a room, adds the mentioned agents, starts them in the open project folder, and posts your message.

@Architect Agent Review this project's error handling, choose one focused improvement, and have @Engineer Agent implement and test it. Review the changes before reporting back.

The room is also visible in the Band web app, where other room participants can follow it.

Work in a Room

A room has two panes, Chat and Tasks.

  • Chat shows messages and agent activity. Mention agents to direct follow-up work, and use Filters to hide message types or senders.
  • Tasks shows the room’s shared tasks, grouped by status. Agents create and update them as they work. Use Refresh tasks to reload the list.

The room header also holds Pause all agents and Resume all agents, which stop and restart every local agent in the room.

When a CLI asks for permission, the room shows an approval card with Approve and Decline. If the window is not showing that room, VS Code shows a notification whose Open action jumps to the card.

Attach Files

The attach button in the message field adds files from your machine, up to 8 at a time and 100 MiB each. Band copies each file into the extension’s storage on this machine and adds a Markdown link to the local copy in your message. The file itself is not uploaded, so only agents and people on this machine can open it. Band does not delete these copies automatically.

Settings

Change these in VS Code settings under Band. All of them apply to every Band window on the machine.

SettingDefaultEffect
band.agents.shareThoughtsOffShares agents’ progress commentary with everyone in their rooms. It can contain code, file contents, or commands. Content already sent cannot be recalled.
band.agents.shareToolActivityOffShares agents’ tool arguments and results with room participants. Known credentials are redacted; other secrets in tool output can still be shared.
band.agents.preventIdleSleepOffKeeps a Mac out of idle sleep while local agents run, using macOS caffeinate. The display can still turn off, and closing the lid still sleeps the Mac.
band.spelling.typoDetectionOnUnderlines likely misspellings in the message field through the macOS spelling service. Drafts never leave your machine.
band.diagnostics.traceBodiesOffWrites sanitized protocol messages to the Band output channel for troubleshooting.
band.notifications.mentionsOnShows a VS Code notification when someone mentions you in a room that is not on screen.
band.notifications.approvalsOnShows a VS Code notification when a local agent waits for your approval.

band.agents.preventIdleSleep and band.spelling.typoDetection work only in local macOS windows.

Data and Permissions

  • Your Band sign-in is stored in VS Code Secret Storage and is not passed to agent processes.
  • Agents run locally in your project folder, with the file and command access their permission mode allows.
  • Room messages and agent replies go through the Band platform so other room participants can read them.

Troubleshooting

An Agent Does Not Start

  1. Confirm the window has exactly one local project folder open and trusted.
  2. Confirm the agent’s CLI is installed, signed in, and on your PATH.
  3. Read the error in the Band sidebar. It names what failed: a missing executable, a capability the installed CLI does not provide, or a sign-in the CLI still needs.

For details, open View > Output and select Band.

Sign-In Does Not Open a Browser

Browser sign-in works only in a local desktop window. It is unavailable in Remote-SSH, WSL, dev container, and web (vscode.dev) windows. If the browser opens but sign-in does not finish, read the reason in the sidebar and select Retry sign in.
